This webinar provided a framework for different components needed as a responsible educator, and how to implement these aspects at local training programs. The intended audience Program Directors, Associate Program Directors, Program Coordinators, faculty, and trainees who plan to pursue an academic career.  

Faculty Development
The skills of being an effective teacher, educator, mentor and scholar are often not taught formally, and one of the most desired topics that surgical faculty at all levels wish to learn more about. It is such an integral part of residency training that the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Common Program Requirements now requires that “faculty participation in faculty development activities should be monitored and recorded.”

Curriculum Design
One of the elements of instituting educational change is the creation of a curriculum. The methodology of curricula design will be briefly presented, and working breakout sessions will be used to show how it can be created or integrated into commonly used educational formats such as morbidity/mortality conferences, simulation labs, and journal club models.

Teaching in the Operating Room

Course Description
This webinar on “Teaching in the Operating Room”, organized by the Faculty Development Committee of the TSDA, will provide a framework on the different components needed as a responsible educator, and how to implement these aspects into their own local programs.  The operating room is obviously the surgeons’ most cherished “lecture hall.”  Though honing technical skills is the main focus, this environment remains the least structured and studied format for teaching surgery.  The goals of this session would be to provide a framework in the pre-, intra- and postoperative setting to promote effective teaching.  Noting that the skills sets are different for the subspecialties in our field, after a general overview, the attendees will break out into the areas of cardiac, general thoracic and congenital surgery.  The audience would include program directors and coordinators, faculty, and trainees who plan to pursue an academic career.

Course Description
This webinar covered two topics organized by the Faculty Development Committee of the TSDA. The first part focused on what is surgical educational research, how to conduct it, and use it and other educational contributions as a foundation for academic promotion and advancement. The second and perhaps the most important portion of the webinar, focused on how to implement wellness programs at your institution. Especially during these trying times, burnout remains a prevalent problem among all care workers and associates. Despite increasing efforts to mitigate it, fatigue and stress continue to be unrecognized, so a conscious effort needs to be adopted to improve everyone’s well-being. The audience would include program directors and coordinators, faculty, and trainees who plan to pursue an academic career.
