The TSDA agrees with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) interview guidance for the 2023-2024 recruitment cycle. The TSDA recommends the following:
“The AAMC recommends that residency and fellowship programs use a virtual interview format. Reducing the cost of interviewing is a critical step in widening access and improving equity. In addition, initial, specialty-specific studies indicate that applicants prefer virtual interviews and virtual interviewing is consistent with the commitment academic medicine has made to reduce our environmental impact.”
Virtual only interviews and “second look” offerings are a recommendation of TSDA. This recommendation does not supersede the policies, guidance, and mandates of the individual training program’s local Graduate Medical Education (GME) office and Designated Institutional Officer (DIO).

The TSDA requests that programs share their interviewing plans with applicants clearly and early, preferably when application requirements are released.
The TSDA understands that the tangible experience of meeting with candidates and having candidates meet with faculty and trainees is incredibly valuable. But we also appreciate the amazing efforts program directors and their teams have done to create a successful, repeatable, and equitable virtual interview process. By choosing a virtual interview process, you will increase applicant satisfaction, while reducing their financial toxicity.
