Program: Northwestern University
Division/Department: Cardiothoracic Surgery
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Clinical Specialty: Advanced Cardiac Surgery Training: Atrial Fibrillation, Advanced Valve Repair, Congestive Heart Failure
Required Documents: Curriculum vitae; USMLE results; ECFMG certificate (if applicable)
Description: A one-year program is available for individuals seeking additional training in cardiac surgery who have completed a United States, board-approved training program in cardiac surgery and are eligible for medical licensure in the State of Illinois. This is a 12-month experience on the adult cardiac surgery service at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Six months will be focused on atrial fibrillation and valve surgery. The institution performs over 100 MAZE surgeries annually and offers both concomitant and stand-alone procedures. The stand-alone spectrum ranges from thoracoscopic-assisted minimally invasive pulmonary vein isolation to traditional cut-and-sew classic MAZEs. The concomitant experience typically uses alternate energy sources and accompanies mitral valve repair. As the program performs more than 100 mitral valve repairs annually, this experience also provides the fellow with proficiency in repairing all forms of complex mitral pathology. In addition, we offer experience in percutaneous and trans-apical aortic valve replacement.
Six months will be focused on surgery for congestive heart failure. This includes ventricular assist devices and heart transplantation and also complex surgery for congestive heart failure. The institution has a vast experience with ventricular reconstruction (modified DOR procedure), low-EF mitral valve repair and electrical reconstruction. In addition, the program is participating in several trials with innovative therapies and devices for patients with end-stage heart disease.
Clinical research opportunities are also available. Salary and rank will commensurate with experience. Northwestern University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Educator and Employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
